The Aichi D3A, or "Embarked Bomber of Marine Type 99," is a two-seater bomber in Japanese tandem, in service from 1940 to 1945, during the Second World War.

Named Val by the Pacific Allies code, it was the first Japanese aircraft to bomb American targets, and also the one that managed to sink the largest number of allied combat ships. This aircraft participated in virtually all Japanese naval operations in the Second World War. Notably the infamous Pearl Harbor attack.
Although Aichi D3A1 was little used in China or Indochina in 1940, 126 Val constituted the first Japanese wave to surprise US military installations at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The D3A1 then participated in all Japanese air operations during the ten first months of the war (12th, 14th, 31st, 32nd, 35th, 40th, 541st and 582nd Kōkūtai). Among other things, on April 5, 1942, during the Imperial Navy raid in the Indian Ocean, they sent the cruisers HMS Cornwall and HMS Dorsetshire. Four days later, aircraft carrier HMS Hermes was deployed off Ceylon and sunk with its escort: destroyer HMAS Vampire, corvette Hollyhock and two supply tankers.

In the fall of 1942, D3A2 entered service, with previous models being sent to schools. However, after the Battle of Midway, the lack of experienced pilots, coupled with insufficient performance, began to pose serious problems. The arrival of the Yokosuka D4Y Suisei in the front line led in 1943 to the relegation of the Val to units based on shore or operating from small aircraft carriers.

In 1944, the American forces returned to the Philippines, where the D3A2s who had not returned to the training units in Japan were totally overwhelmed and suffered very heavy losses. In 1945, there are still D3A2s in operations, used for suicide bomber attacks.

In 1945, the Indonesian guerrillas recovered a number of D3As from the old Japanese bases, which were quickly destroyed by the Dutch air force during the colonial police operations between 1945 and 1949.
